UNESCO Chair
Mathematics and Development
Presentation and Objectives
The UNESCO Chair "Mathematics
and Development" is meant to be a privileged space of interaction between
the North and South Mathematicians. It may evolve as forum of exchanges
between Mathematicians in the South and will enhance both Higher Education
and scientific research in crucial development fields.
Furthermore, the thematic
diversity offered by the Chair, will contribute to the scientific development
of the countries in the South, which can be effective only if it keeps
in pace with world scientific standards. That implies opening up to international
exchanges.
The thematic semesters
also aim at enabling mathematicians, who have not carried any research activities
for some time, to resume research work in modern mathematics linked with
development issues.
In the long run, the Chair
should contribute to the renewal of Applied Mathematics and its actors
in the region.
A part from all these seminal
activities, the UNESCO Chair "Mathematics and Development" will give the
opportunity to start some PhD theses co-supervised by experts who participed
to one of the semesters either as speakers or participants.
